Bulls In The City
Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of designing my own sculpture as part of the Bulls in the City art trail in Birmingham.
My sculpture, Flora & Forna, was inspired by my love of folk art and the natural beauty of the English countryside. I wanted to create something that felt uplifting and joyful—something that would bring a smile to people’s faces as they walked by.
The design is full of intricate floral motifs: sunflowers, daisies, tulips—each one carefully placed to form a lush, blooming tapestry across the bull’s body. Nestled among the flowers are symbolic doves, representing peace, hope, and unity.
To balance the traditional folk-art influence, I opted for a modern colour palette—soft pastels mixed with bold, earthy tones. The contrast gives the sculpture a contemporary feel while still nodding to nostalgia and heritage. It was important to me that Flora & Forna felt rooted in something familiar yet looked fresh and stylish in the city streets.
A huge thank-you to Harborne Village BID!. Harborne Village BID is dedicated to creating a welcoming, vibrant community where local businesses and residents can thrive. Their support meant Flora & Forna could take its place among the four featured bull sculptures and fifteen calf sculptures dotted around Harborne this summer.
